There is no official info that the game will be verified for Steam Deck, however, the previous Spider-Man game was playable on the handheld, so it’s possible that the sequel will be as well. There’s no debate about whether Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 are great games. They’re exceptional, with the sequel polishing on an already absolute thrill of an experience. But the fact is, the sequel adds a ton more new features and makes quality-of-life changes that can’t be ignored. The PS5 makes it so your playthrough is as seamless and glitch-free as possible.
And I applaud them for trying to use new characters; however, it came at the cost of a cohesive universe. It brings you closer to that Batman feeling of utterly dominating nameless thugs with your combat prowess. And the way both characters’ powers grow over the course of the story are very satisfying. Spider-Man 2 is a fantastic game that is typically difficult to find fault with, so it’s a shame that the PC version has such serious issues at launch. With 2023’s Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Insomniac Games delivered yet another pulse-pounding superhero adventure, one that built on the foundation laid by the beloved 2018 game and took everything to the next level. Spider-Man 2 is still one of the best superhero games you can play, but it’s best to stick with the PS5 version over the PC port for now. At the center of the plot are the relationships of the heroes with characters from their surroundings, against the backdrop of typical superhero routine and important socio-social issues. The multilayered narrative spans a long period of game time, allowing for the inclusion of many events and characters at the expense of depth in their development.
Peter and Miles oversee a prisoner transfer at the R.A.F.T., but are rudely interrupted by Kraven and his forces as they seek to capture the villains for unknown purposes. In the aftermath, Mary Jane quits the Daily Bugle to run her own podcast and moves in with Peter, who opts to take a break from being Spider-Man to focus on rebuilding the EMF, trusting Miles to protect the city on his own. Meanwhile, Norman blames the Spider-Men for ruining Harry’s recovery; he visits an imprisoned Otto Octavius at the Raft to demand their secret identities, but Octavius refuses, taking glee in Norman’s suffering. Miles completes his college essay and meets Rio’s new boyfriend, Albert Moon, who introduces them to his daughter Cindy.
Peter’s combat system changes with the appearance of the symbiote, adding spectacular and dangerous abilities. The combat system in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is still built on acrobatic maneuvers and web shooting for non-lethal stunning of opponents during fights, but it has been expanded and improved. Both heroes received four active combat skills that can be chosen from a larger number of options, and the skills from previous games have been retained by the heroes and do not need to be unlocked again.
As with its thoughtful missions and characters, the game’s traversal system takes the best of the previous two Spider-Man games and expands them tenfold. Both Peter and Miles retain their own unique way of swinging and flipping through the city, replete with a collectible wardrobe of suits that sent this reviewer to the game’s photo mode for hours. Spider-Man 2 features an engaging superhero story full of twists and turns, brand-new symbiote powers to master as Peter Parker, and tons of incredible fights. It all takes place in a gorgeously-rendered open world New York City that, despite the odd graphical hiccup and clipping here and there, looks as good if not better on PC as it does on PS5. The animations are smooth, the combat is fast-paced and exciting, and the web-swinging exploration is top-notch.
And although it means the loss of the endlessly entertaining sequences of a masked up Spidey taking the subway, it shows once again that Insomniac are one of the few developers capable of showing off the flashy speeds of an SSD. And although it makes the larger map somehow feel smaller, the density of detail crammed in each city block helps make the world feel alive. The one universal truth among gamers is that all lamented the Mary Jane Watson portions of 2018’s game. Plodding in execution and pace, they served only to show how mundane a Spider-Man game could be without Spider-Man. Thankfully, the developers have taken note and, although they haven’t omitted alternative character sections, they have substantially improved them.
On PS5 in 2023, Spider-Man 2 at least served as an impressive technical showcase for the hardware, and a blockbuster release in a relatively quiet release schedule. On PC in 2025, without those advantages and in a disappointingly shaky state, it’s much more difficult to recommend. In a story ultimately all about the emotional stakes and the cast’s relationships with each other, the actual personalities are remarkably flat. Almost everyone fills essentially the same role (Incredibly Nice Genius) and the addition of Miles’ supporting cast means there’s twice as many of them chattering at you.
