Well, aside from its historical significance, there are many fans who consider Demon’s Souls to be FromSoftware’s best game. While much of that praise is rightfully reserved for the title’s art direction (which, again, shines brighter than ever in this visual masterpiece), others say that Demon’s Souls features some of the best Soulslike gameplay. Turn to your left to enter the first fog door, turn right and you will find a Fat Official, and loot him to obtain the Iron Ring of Keys.

A truly unique armor set in Demon’s Souls, the Binded Cross armor set looks a bit rough, but certainly comes with a specific vibe, as well as some protection from various types of damage. Getting this set requires some specific work, forcing you to go after the Executioner Miralda in the Boletarian Palace 1 – 1. The remake does introduce changes I bristle at, but these are minor concerns, like font choices, enemy redesigns, and amusing bits of charm getting smoothed over. I even took time to stop and appreciate the fidelity of the flowing sewage in the game’s notoriously gross Valley of Defilement.

Looks aside, questions remain regarding the extent of this remake. The biggest unanswered question may be whether or not Demon’s Souls will embrace some of the innovations of the later entries in the Souls series. Slaying NPCs (specially the friendly ones) will shift your Character Tendency to Black. While we highly discourage doing this, you can obtain some unique items so it can be worth doing before clearing the game. Reaching TR88 or White state can make major changes to your location. This can cause some NPCs to appear, make troublesome enemies disappear, etc.

Go through it, keep advancing forward, until you have no choice but to turn right. Before doing so, in front of you, there is a cage holding several boulders. Don’t position yourself in front of it, and try to hit it from the side.

For now, enjoy this incredibly beautiful remaster of a classic game that many of us are finally getting a chance to experience. While you can skip ahead to 1-2 right at the start of the game, I recommend saving the other areas listed here until after you’ve finished each first zone — with the exception of maybe 5-1. Dark Souls limits the number of times players can use their flask before they need to rest at a bonfire, but Demon’s Souls players can lug around a significant amount of healing grass with them at all times. The game is still incredibly challenging, but it does alleviate the pressure a little bit. There are even more things preventing a Demon’s Souls sequel, primarily that the demand for a follow-up isn’t all that high in the grand scheme of things. While devout players are quite outspoken about a second installment, there’s easily more demand for something like Bloodborne 2 that faces identical hurdles. If FromSoftware and Sony were ever to reboot an old IP, Demon’s Souls isn’t even at the top of the list.
